2024 Pre-College Summer Program

On the cusp of its 11th year, the School of Architecture’s summer program for high school and college students has reached record attendance. The number of high school participants this year has jumped to 115, while the number of college participants has reached 22, marking an 67% increase from the program's total 2024 enrollment.

The summer program has been coordinated by Acting Associate Dean Mersiha Veledar, AIA over the past seven years with annual support from student teaching assistants. This year an impressive team of twelve Cooper students will co-teach with Veledar: ten B.Arch. students—Hugh Adams (AR'27), Marcus Clemmons (AR'29), Benjamin Haslam (AR'27), Krittee Meemongkol (AR'26), Helena Uceda (AR'28), Amira Walcott (AR'27), Ashley Wu (AR'26), Julian Yang (AR'25), Yang Zheng (AR'29), and Zara Zulfiqar (AR'25)—and two M.S.Arch. students—Kipras Kazlauskas (AR'26) and Ninel Shahnazarian (AR'26).

Notable Guest Lectures
This year's program features distinguished guest lecturers Sean Canty (Studio Sean Canty | Boston, MA); Anne Romme (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts | Copenhagen, Denmark); and Yasmin Vobis (Ultramoderne | Providence, RI and San Francisco, CA). Cooper Union faculty lectures will be presented by Acting Dean Benjamin Aranda, Kayla Montes de Oca, Frederick Rapp, and Nader Tehrani

Mauricio Higuera, the School of Architecture’s public programs and new projects director, administers the program’s admissions, promotion, outreach, and recruitment.

Virtual Platform and Global Outreach
The summer program is taught online and has attracted a truly diverse range of local, national, and global participants. US students will participate from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida, Minnesota, Maryland, Arizona, Iowa, Texas, California, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Oregon, and Washington; international students have enrolled from Belgium, China, Canada, Taiwan, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Hong Kong, and Turkey.

Both programs kick off this upcoming Monday, July 7 and last five weeks for high school students and four weeks for college students. We are thrilled to welcome the incoming students to The Cooper Union!

Additional examples of recent student work from the 2024 Summer Program at The School of Architecture can be found here.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
