Required materials for the weekend intensive:
*Experienced students are encouraged to pursue independent projects in the materials of their choice.
Charcoal: Soft vine or willow; soft, medium and hard compressed; square Charkole (cheap, black pastel); pencils optional
Black Waterproof Drawing Ink: Asian sumei or Pelikan, Winsor Newton, Higgins
Brush: Sable or other soft hair, bristle, or synthetic: rounds, flats, brights
Sticks (twigs); 4 water containers; absorbent cotton rag
Graphite Sticks or Woodless Pencils (Pitt brand): B, 4B, 6B, 9B
Black Conte Crayon: HB, B, 2B or the “Classic” Conte set
Erasers: Artgum, rubber or plastic, kneaded
Artist or Masking tape
Chamois and soft cotton rag
Single-edge razor blade
Sandpaper
Drawing board or foamcore
PAPER (Number of sheets of paper will vary depending on individual’s work pace):
For Dry Media: Basic Drawing (Vellum or Smooth), Charcoal/Pastel
For Wet/Dry Media: Watercolor, coldpress or hotpress; Printmaking; Bristol Artist-grade paper brands widely available include Arches, Strathmore, Rives, Fabriano, Canson, Lana, Saunders. Paper sizes will vary, but some standard sheet sizes are 19 x 24", 22 x 30" and larger. Watercolor blocks and pads come in a variety of other sizes as well. Manufacturers listed above provide professional-grade materials that are widely available. Other brands may be substituted.
