Minor in Chemistry

CHEMISTRY MINOR (CM) WORKSHEET [PDF]

The Department of Chemistry offers a minor in Chemistry to all undergraduate students in the School of Engineering. Students must complete General Chemistry (Ch110, 3 credits) and General Chemistry Laboratory (Ch111, 1.5 credits) as well as 16 additional credits from a list of approved courses (see below). At least 2 credits must come from a 200+ level Chemistry laboratory course and at least 2 courses must be “advanced” courses, as determined by the Department. No more than 4 credits may be used towards the fulfillment of any specific degree requirements, and no more than 6 credits may be chosen from Ch 391-398 and Ch 491-494.

A maximum of 3 credits may also be used towards the fulfillment of another minor, such as the Bioengineering minor or the Computer Science minor. If any credits are at the 400 level, they may not also be used towards the fulfillment of requirements for a master’s degree in Engineering. An overall GPA, at graduation, of at least 3.0 among the Chemistry courses described above and applied to the minor (minimum of 20.5 credits) is also required.

Program Goals

Students who complete the Minor in Chemistry will 

  1. demonstrate a broad understanding of introductory chemistry concepts and analytical laboratory techniques, 
  2. develop intermediate-level training and hands-on capabilities in modern experimental chemistry, 
  3. gain skills and knowledge within one or more of the principal subfields of modern chemistry according to their interests and professional goals, and 
  4. have opportunities to participate in undergraduate research in chemistry.

This list will be reviewed on an annual basis and modified as needed. Students and faculty may apply for the inclusion of additional courses either on an ongoing or on a case-by-case basis. In both cases, these courses will be reviewed by the Department of Chemistry as to whether they include sufficient chemistry content to be included. In addition to the courses listed here, all courses with a “Ch” prefix offered by the Chemistry department may be applied towards the Chemistry minor but must be classified by the Chemistry department as to what level is applicable.
