Exploring Responsive Type
Monday, July 11, 2022, 12:30 - 2:30pm
Variable fonts are often promoted for their flexibility in adapting to different device constraints. As part of The Herb Lubalin Study Center and Type@Cooper's Herb Lubalin Lecture Series, Marie Otsuka (Occupant Fonts) will explore their potential to respond to contexts outside the browser — considering type as a performative medium over time. Drawing from the design process behind the typeface Pentameter and its specimen site, Otsuka will share how we might extend variable technology into our environments through creative coding.
Marie Otsuka is a Brooklyn-based designer / developer working on fonts, websites, and tools. She draws typefaces at Occupant Fonts, while independently collaborating with organizations and artists on various typographic projects. Her type design education began as a graduate student at Rhode Island School of Design, where she now also teaches type / programming-related courses.
