Collage for All provides an inclusive approach to collage for all participants. From total beginners to experienced collagers: all are welcome. Students learn how to construct an original collage from scratch, and produce at least 5 collages in this six-week class.

Class projects include landscape, still life, and portrait collages. Beginning with a lesson on painting papers with acrylic paint, students incorporate their own found materials with projects that draw on their experiences, ideas, and imaginings. Water-based painting lessons include information about color mixing, paint application, and brush work. Demonstrations on cutting (with both X-acto blades and scissors), gluing, and composition provide a technical foundation for independent work. Weekly discussions are a forum for students to share their work, express viewpoints, and gain new insights in a nourishing and supportive environment.

For two sessions, an envelope of surprise collage materials are provided to each student. The challenge is to make a collage with the materials provided, and / or incorporate whatever collage materials the students prefers to work with.

Join us to learn more about collage - and your place within this exciting and accessible form of art!

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
