Update on the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs

Dear Cooper Union,

I am writing to share news that I know many of you are aware of: Dr. Demetrius Eudell, who has served as Cooper’s Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) since July 2023, has accepted a new position at Vassar College where he will be the Dean of Faculty.

Dr. Eudell came to The Cooper Union as our first VPAA. In his time here, his contributions include securing grant funding, such as the recent Teagle Foundation award; initiating the review of academic affairs policies; providing valuable guidance for reaccreditation processes in architecture and with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; facilitating a speaker series aimed at fostering productive dialogue and broadening perspectives on the Israel-Palestine conflict; and supporting the efforts of the Anti-Bias and Anti-Discrimination Task Force. (The Task Force’s report and related programming will be shared early next semester.)

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Eudell for his service to Cooper Union. I wish everyone a strong finish to the fall semester.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
