JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Dean of Engineering, the Laboratory and Technician Manager supports the operations of the School of Engineering by providing and overseeing safe, efficient and well-maintained laboratory facilities, including the managing of a staff of laboratory technicians. The Manager will be responsible for ensuring best practices in undergraduate and research laboratories and workshops are implemented and followed. The Manager will coordinate with the Dean's Office, the faculty and the staff to ensure that the technicians are providing the support that is needed for labs and workshops to operate safely and effectively.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Manage and support the technicians including hiring, on-going training, scheduling, performance management and budgeting.
•    Ensure that technicians train students and faculty in lab policies and procedures, safety and on the proper use of equipment.
•    Liaise with Facilities and technicians and the Deans Office on capital budgets, projects, and equipment upgrades.
•    Expertise to operate and train others in the laboratory equipment used in the School of Engineering including digital fabrication tools, and a wide variety of testing and analytical equipment supporting chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
•    Assure that labs and workshops are appropriately supported by the technicians for their most effective use by faculty and students.
•    Oversee supplies, materials and equipment purchasing. Approve purchases for non-departmental labs and shops.
•    Coordinate equipment maintenance and repair schedules and budgets.
•    Work with faculty and staff where appropriate to hire undergraduate and graduate students for work-study or part-time jobs during the academic year and/or summer. 
•    Ensures that the staff member(s) responsible for Tier II reporting is maintaining the chemical inventory and that all inventory is maintained scheduled for replacement when necessary. 
•    Liaise with student competitive clubs and their leadership on project status and other needs.
•    Coordinate with multiple departments in the School of Engineering on the purchase of cross disciplinary equipment.
•    Collaborate with Safety Director on policy, access and other guidelines.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS
•    Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, faculty, technicians, staff and students 
•    Expertise in the operation of engineering and science laboratory equipment used in the School of Engineering
•    Familiarity with CAD, HVAC and other building systems
•    Knowledge of shop safety and environmental health hazards, including fire and emergency procedures
•    Capacity to build trust and cooperation across diverse communities
•    Ability to creatively problem-solve
•    Competence to manage budgets
•    Ability to manage staff including training and performance management 
•    Applicant must be certified in first aid/CPR training
 

EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree in STEM field required

Salary range: Between $85k and $100k, depending on experience
