Type@Cooper is The Cooper Union’s post-graduate certificate program in typeface design that was established in 2010. Over the span of 13 years, the program has graduated over 300 students. The program has slowly evolved over time, most radically and rapidly, during the pandemic with the shift to online instruction. What has always stayed consistent is the incredible quality of the work the students produce. It’s a testament to their talent, but also to their hard work and dedication. For many students, this was the first time they designed a typeface from scratch. The students had to juggle family and work obligations while enrolled in the course. With the expansion of the program to online instruction, the geographic range of students has also grown; in fact, the graduates of the last three years hailed from 11 countries. For some of them, this meant being in class deep into the night or very early in the morning.
This exhibition highlights and celebrates work by some of the 57 graduates from the three most recent years of the program, the classes of ’21, ’22, and ’23. The design of the original typefaces on display in these posters was done over the course of two 10-week terms, and on a part-time schedule. The design on view is as diverse as the students themselves and of very high quality.
