By “cutting together-apart”, physicist and theorist Karen Barad’s "agential cut" transforms the architectural section from a static representation into a performative tool, jostling totalizing narratives into active, relational becoming—operating not as division, but as transubstantiation. This lecture will frame a portion of the ongoing artistic research project Unworlding the Anatomical Theater in Uppsala and the built project Torö in light of each other, attending to the “agential cut” in AT–HH’s engagement with the as-found and the as-built.

Established in 2018 by Malin Heyman and James Hamilton, Atelier Heyman–Hamilton (AT–HH) is a collaborative practice centering situated critical methods in both building and research. The studio addresses the material, spatial, and ideological legacies of existing architecture through transformation and adaptive reuse, treating buildings as active sites of negotiation.

The practice was awarded the 2023 Young Swedish Architecture prize for the project Torö, and their research has been funded by the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. Their built work, writing, and research have been exhibited at the Venice and Seoul Biennales, Archivo and Proyector in Mexico City, the Modern Museum in Stockholm, and the Spanish Academy in Rome—and featured in Mani-fest, Architectural Digest, Arkitektur, Dezeen, and the BBC. The monograph Heyman Hamilton 05 was published by Editions QNDMC/GRAM in 2025.

Malin Heyman is an architect, writer, editor, and co-founder of AT–HH. She is a PhD candidate and the project leader of the four-year artistic research project Unworlding the Anatomical Theater in Uppsala at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where she has led design studios since 2015. Malin currently holds positions as a visiting scholar at Columbia University and a guest professor at The Cooper Union. Educated at KTH, The Cooper Union, and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Her writing has been published in A+U, Architectural Dissonances, A.MAG, Arkitektur, and Rotunda.

James Hamilton is a Stockholm-based architect and co-founder of AT–HH. Educated at The Cooper Union and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, he has served on the KTH architecture faculty since 2015, where he has taught undergraduate design studios and oversees the development and implementation of the representation curriculum. Prior to establishing AT–HH, his experience in applied research, adaptive reuse, and urban planning included work with OMA in New York (notably Cornell University’s Milstein Hall) and the City of Melbourne’s Architecture and Design Department.
