A design studio must be able to pivot, even daily, between dramatically different projects. In this talk as part of the Herb Lubalin Lecture Series, Triboro partner David Heasty will unpack two of the studio’s latest works. The first is Jupiter—Triboro’s identity and artwork for a new restaurant located at one of the most iconic locations on earth—the skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza. The second project discussed is a new and greatly expanded visual identity for Japan Airlines. Throughout Heasty will offer insights (and rants) on embracing intuition in the design process, finding original inspiration, and methods for infusing meaning into any brand, be it an icon or a startup.

Registration is required here.

David Heasty is a co-founder of Triboro, the Brooklyn-based consultancy that creates design for icons. The studio’s recent work includes major identity projects for the likes of MoMA, Marc Jacobs, Nike and Japan Airlines. In addition, Triboro crafts objects and artworks for musicians. Recent projects include designing the memoirs for Paul McCartney and Prince, plus artworks and albums for Nine Inch Nails, Blonde Redhead, Zola Jesus, and Justin Timberlake. Triboro’s partners have won numerous industry awards and their work has been featured in publications and exhibitions around the world.

Located in the Frederick P. Rose Auditorium, at 41 Cooper Square (on Third Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets)

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
