Hagley Museum and Library Tour
Thursday, July 17
10:00am-1:00pm

Hagley Museum
200 Hagley Creek Road
Wilmington, DE  19807

Located on 235 acres along the banks of the Brandywine in Wilmington, Delaware, Hagley is the site of the gunpowder works founded by E. I. du Pont in 1802. This example of early American industry includes restored mills, a workers' community, and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family. The Museum explores personal stories of the 19th-century DuPont Company employees, how they lived, and how their lifestyles changed along with new machinery and new production methods. In addition to highlighting the industrial work of the 19th century, similar to that of Peter Cooper, the Hagley Library holds a small archive of records from the Cooper & Hewitt ironworks company, a partnership of Peter Cooper’s son Edward and son-in-law Abram S. Hewitt.

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
