The lecture is part of Julian Palacio’s ARCH 122B Structures I Course. Petr Tej will give a presentation on the implementation of several bridge structures constructed from ultra-high performance concrete, covering all stages from design and structural solutions to production technology. Particular emphasis will be placed on the largest project — the Štvanice Footbridge in central Prague — which has been nominated for the prestigious EU Mies Award 2026.

Petr Tej is a renowned architect and structural engineer specializing in concrete structures, bridges, and footbridges. He was nominated for the 2025 UIA Auguste Perret Prize for technology in architecture. Tej graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He works as the head of the Department of Bridge Structures at the Klokner Institute of the Czech Technical University in Prague. He founded the Bridge Structures studio. His projects are often created in cooperation with renowned Czech and foreign architects and structural engineers. One of the most recent significant projects is the Štvanice footbridge over Moldau river in Prague.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
