Naomi Akiyama ChE'23 and Caitlin Noonan ChE'25 Win 1st Place Undergraduate Research Competition at the 2022 AlChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Student Conference

Chemical engineering students Naomi Akiyama ChE’23, Caitlin Noonan ChE’25, Nicholas Louie ChE’24, Kevin Liang ChE’24, Donald Tang ChE’24, and Sunny Zhao ChE’22 attended the 2022 AlChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Student Conference at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey.


At the conference, students participated in two days of career information, social events, competitions, and more. This year, Naomi Akiyama ChE'23 and Caitlin Noonan ChE'25 participated in the Undergraduate Research Presentation Competition on topics that focus on recent advances in chemical engineering, original research, or plant design. 


Caitlin and Naomi placed 1st for their research on “CO2 Adsorption on Biochar,” where carbon dioxide adsorbent mitigates the impacts of climate change. The 1st place win will result in an invitation to present at the Global Competition at the 2022 AlChE Annual Student Conference this November, among other 1st place winners from each global region.


We gratefully acknowledge the generous contributions of Alan Fortier ChE’79 in support of the Chemical Professional Development Award Fund, which supported the participation of students at the event.  Student researchers were also supported by the Henry C. Enders Scholarship and by a generous grant to support bioengineering research from a foundation that wishes to remain anonymous.
