Jennifer Weiser, associate professor of chemical engineering, and Mili Shah, professor and chair of mathematics, represented The Cooper Union at the 33rd Annual Meeting of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS), held June 16–19, 2025, in Davos, Switzerland. This year's meeting was hosted by the AO Research Institute Davos and was a joint venture with ARI Orthopedics and International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery.

Professor Weiser gave an invited keynote talk and co-chaired the session “Developing an Education Pipeline into Orthopedics” with Professor Gabriela Graziani, General Secretary of EORS and faculty member at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering, at Politecnico di Milano of Milan, Italy. The session emphasized building interdisciplinary pathways to engage students in orthopedic science and inspire future leaders in the field.

Professor Shah presented her work in an invited talk titled “Using Exoskeletons to Inspire Undergraduate Research,” highlighting how wearable robotic technologies can be leveraged as powerful tools for undergraduate education, hands-on learning, and early-stage research training.

In addition, Christopher J. Panebianco, an alumnus of Cooper’s Albert Nerken School of Engineering, delivered a featured presentation titled “Enhancing Postdoctoral Research with Mindful Teaching and Mentoring,” offering insights into cultivating supportive research environments that benefit both trainees and institutions. Since graduating with his bachelor’s in chemical engineering in 2016, Panebianco received his Ph.D. from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and has collaborated on engineering education research with Weiser.

The EORS Annual Meeting is a premier international gathering dedicated to advancing orthopedic science, education, and translational research. This year’s conference convened leading experts from around the world to share discoveries and foster collaborations in musculoskeletal health. Their participation underscores The Cooper Union’s commitment to fostering innovation that bridges disciplines and drives progress in human health.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
