Engineering students Ryan Chowdhury ChE’25, Effie Bluestone EE’25, Kanghyuk Lee ME’24, and Jared Sealy ChE’24, attended the 12th Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference (NASEC) at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland.

The U.S. Naval Academy stands as a prominent institution of higher education, particularly excelling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Annually, they organize the Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference (NASEC) to facilitate dialogues among policy makers, science advisors, university faculty, and students, addressing significant challenges in science and engineering. This year's conference delved into the theme of Genetics: Understanding and Addressing Today’s Challenges.

During NASEC, our students had the privilege of listening to esteemed speakers sharing their insights on Data Science. They actively participated in discussions and research, exploring crucial scientific and technical challenges that impact both the nation and the global community. Undergraduate students who wish to attend must be nominated by the Dean or President of their college.

"My 48 hours at the 12th Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference in Annapolis, Maryland was an experience like no other. It allowed me to meet undergraduates from across the country and midshipmen from the Naval Academy. We discussed the ethics, applications, and future of genetic technologies across many fields. Thank you to the conference organizers for providing a space for organized discussion and a foundation to make lifelong connections. Thank you to the speakers for taking your time to not only answer the attendees' questions but also to know us as people. And thank you to Professor Ben Davis for nominating me and The Cooper Union for helping me attend this conference." – Ryan Chowdhury ChE’25

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
