Deborah Magnus A'59 passed away on May 13, 2023:

Mathilda Goldenberg-Abler A'42

White Plains - Mathilda (Loebel) Maslow Goldenberg Abler A'42 of White Plains, NY, passed away peacefully at 101 on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at White Plains Hospital. Mattie was born in Brooklyn on March 7, 1920, the beloved daughter of Arthur and Harriett (Herrmann) Loebel.

 Mattie attended Cooper Union in NYC (Fine Arts degree), and her artistry was on view in her many lovely paintings and drawings, and in her eye for color coordination even in her most casual dress. This was ever evident to her many friends and family until the day of her passing.

Melvin Mathisen ME'53

Melvin Mathisen ME'53 died on January 1, 2023. He was born on September 10, 1928, in Brooklyn New York. Before his first birthday, he moved to Norway and was raised for the next nine years in the small farming town where his parents both grew up. He returned to Brooklyn where he met his future wife, Eva, on a church bike ride. They wed in 1949 and had three children, Dave, Ken, and Kris. Their nephew, Paul Mulhern, also lived with them for a brief period in the early 1970s.

Lynn Tumulty A'67

Lynn Frances Tumulty A'67, age 77, died on June 9, 2023, at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Facility. Previously, Lynn had undergone palliative hospice treatment at her home for over two years.

The eldest daughter of the late John and Frances Price, Lynn was born on August 20, 1945, in Newark, New Jersey. Raised in Glen Ridge, NJ, Lynn graduated from Glen Ridge High in 1963. She continued her education by earning a full scholarship to the prestigious Cooper Union Institute in New York City. Lynn graduated from Cooper Union in 1967 with a fine arts degree. 

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
