On Architectured Material: Sarat Babu (Betatype)

Dr. Sarat Babu is a material scientist and designer that has focused on converging both disciplines into a singular practice. To that end he founded Betatype, an entity focusing on developing materials and future products through new manufacturing process. Betatype focuses on physical making at the heart of its methods, alloying both technical analysis and craft techniques to simultaneously design materials and forms that can create a new generation of products.
In addition, Sarat is a research associate in Medical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London and a Senior Visiting Tutor on Innovation Design Engineering, Department of Production at the Royal College of Art. He holds degrees in Material Science and Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering and a Doctorate in Virtual Environments Imaging and Visualisation and is currently an Industrial Fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.
