Reviel Netz is the Suppes Professorship of Greek Mathematics and Astronomy and Professor of Classics and by courtesy of Philosophy at Stanford University. Prof. Netz's main field is the history of pre-modern mathematics. His research involves the wider issues of the history of cognitive practices, e.g. visual culture, the history of the book, and literacy, and numeracy.  Prof. Netz has published extensively including many books, several on the translation and commentary of the works of Archimedes, a subject on which he is a leading authority.

On March 27, Prof. Netz will present the story of the Archimedes Palimpsest, describing how an ancient manuscript was decoded and provided the answers to long unknown mathematical and historical questions.

Location: 41 Cooper Square, Rose Auditorium | Time: 5PM

This event is sponsored by the Physics Department and Albert Nerken School of Engineering Dean's Office.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
