Electrical engineering senior, Nishat Ahmed and Master student of electrical engineering Amaan Rahman EE'23 presented research at the ACM SIGMETRICS 2023 conference in Orlando, Florida.

Nishat Ahmed was awarded 3rd place recognition in the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) for research on "Best Practices for Evaluating Exoskeletons with DeepLabCut." Her research was co-authored with Amaan Rahman EE’23 and Lucia Rhode EE’23. The ACM SRC serves as an exceptional platform for both undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their pioneering research at renowned ACM-sponsored and co-sponsored conferences, engaging with a panel of discerning judges and a diverse audience. The competition comprises two preliminary rounds conducted during conferences, culminating in a grand finals competition of exceptional caliber.

Amaan Rahman EE'23 also presented his work at the Undergraduate poster session on “Towards a Markerless 3D Pose Estimation Tool, CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.” Amaan and Nishat each received travel grants tailored to their respective conferences: Amaan was honored with the ACM-W Travel Award, while Nishat secured the Gary Marsden Travel Award.

“While I was a bit intimidated walking into a conference for the first time, I truly enjoyed the experience of meeting and networking with talented, passionate individuals. It was thrilling to share my work with professionals in the field of computer science and receive constructive feedback. My experience at the conference has motivated me to pursue research in graduate school and attend more conferences in the future.” – Nishat Ahmed EE’24

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
