Last month, engineering students Anna Konvicka EE’23, Pauline Phan ChE’23, and Jared J. ME’22 attended the 10th Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference (NASEC) at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland.

The U.S. Naval Academy is a leading institution of higher education with strong programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They host NASEC annually to bring policy makers and science advisors together with university faculty and students to discuss significant science and engineering challenges. This year’s conference theme was Data Science

At the NASEC, our students heard from distinguished speakers about their perspectives on Data Science and engaged in discussion/research on key scientific and technical challenges facing the nation and the world. Attendance at NASEC is limited. Undergraduate students who wish to attend must be nominated by the Dean or President of their college.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
