Registration

Q: How and when do I register for my courses?

The registrar will enroll students in courses this summer. You can look up your schedule in the Course Plan tab in student self-service once the classes have been added. Course schedules will be available before the semester begins, with enough time to request section adjustments for personal obligations.

Transfer students will receive a preliminary transfer evaluation letter. They can then consult with their advisor to create their course schedule. Once this schedule has been approved, they will be registered by the Registrar’s Office before the semester begins.

If you are a student returning from a Leave of Absence for the Fall 2024 semester, you should reach out to your advisor before April 1 to ask about building a schedule for the fall. You’ll be registered for this schedule by the Registrar’s Office before or during the Fall 2024 registration period, April 16 – 19, 2024.

Q: How can I receive credit for AP courses or test out of math placement exams?

This varies per school.

The School of Engineering does not award credit for college courses taken during a student’s high school career. By taking the core math and natural science courses at Cooper, students gain equal footing in the fundamentals. It is this foundational knowledge in which the engineering coursework is built, and it will serve you throughout your time at The Cooper Union.

For students who have taken AP Calculus BC and received a four or a five on the exam, we will offer you the option to test out of  Ma111 (Calculus 1) over the summer. Please watch your email for information about the placement exam.

The School of Architecture may grant credit for Arch 103 Calculus & Analytic Geometry. Please check in with the Acting Dean, Professor Hayley Eber, hayley.eber@cooper.edu for details.

Q: How do I submit my final transcript?

If your final transcript has not been submitted by the end of the current school year, a hold may be placed on your account. Check with your high school guidance counselor to ensure they send the transcript to The Cooper Union. We do not accept mailed copies. Emailed copies may be sent to admissions@cooper.edu, though we strongly prefer they be uploaded to the Common Application or Parchment.

Q: How can I request a leave of absence?

Leaves of Absence can be requested through a Microsoft Form survey. A link to this survey can be obtained by requesting it from your advisor. Your leave request will be reviewed by several relevant departments (including Student Financial Services, your advisor, and your dean). Upon completion of this review process you will receive a separation letter confirming the terms of your leave.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
