Cooper Architecture End of Year Exhibition 2020

While the academic year has ended with faculty and students finishing their work remotely and a celebration of the school’s graduates via a Zoom commencement ceremony, The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union has continued its decades-old year-end tradition by mounting a virtual End of Year Show!

At a time when the school’s buildings are physically inaccessible, Architecture faculty, students, and staff have collaborated to create a virtual exhibition using Unreal Engine gaming technology to visualize and simulate the Foundation Building, allowing visitors to traverse its spaces and explore student work in a digital environment.

The exhibition's opening event will be held online this Wednesday, June 17 at 5 pm EST. The program will include introductory remarks from Dean Nader Tehrani; a tour of virtual exhibition spaces within the Foundation Building by curators Steven Hillyer, Director of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture Archive, and Farzin Lotfi-Jam, Assistant Professor Adjunct; and closing remarks from Assistant Dean Hayley Eber. Please register to receive a Zoom link in advance of the launch event. This is the first in a series of exhibition-related programs the School is planning, with additional events to take place between June 17 and July 31.

The End of Year Show includes work from across all five years of undergraduate design studios, from first year foundational Architectonics through Thesis, as well as work from the Master of Architecture II program, seminars, and other courses. Users navigating the exhibition across several floors of the Foundation Building will be able to view student drawings, 3D renderings, and additional content such as videos, animations, and slide presentations.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
