Dr. Sarat Babu is a material scientist and designer that has focused on converging both disciplines into a singular practice. To that end he founded Betatype, an entity focusing on developing materials and future products through new manufacturing process. Betatype focuses on physical making at the heart of its methods, alloying both technical analysis and craft techniques to simultaneously design materials and forms that can create a new generation of products.

In addition, Sarat is a research associate in Medical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London and a Senior Visiting Tutor on Innovation Design Engineering, Department of Production at the Royal College of Art. He holds degrees in Material Science and Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering and a Doctorate in Virtual Environments Imaging and Visualisation and is currently an Industrial Fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

Open only to current Cooper Union students/faculty/staff

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
