POSTED ON: November 8, 2023
The Deborah Remington Charitable Trust for the Visual Arts, named for the late Cooper Union professor, recently awarded The Cooper Union Archives & Special Collections a grant to support work to digitize and showcase materials stemming from her years teaching in the School of Art. The materials, dating from 1969 through 1997, are part of the archive’s Events and Exhibitions collection.
Remington lectured at Cooper on the history of Chinese and Japanese art in 1969 and returned in 1973 to teach drawing and painting until 1997. Through her time at Cooper, the college hosted numerous exhibitions of work by visiting artists, alumni, staff, and faculty; community events and parties; as well as over two dozen End of Year Shows and hundreds of Senior Shows. The nearly nine-month project supports digital access to tickets, posters, show cards, slides, and photographs from those programs, allowing researchers to use from regardless of location.
The Deborah Remington Trust for the Visual Arts was established in 2010 to preserve the creative legacy of Deborah Remington (1930-2010). Its primary responsibilities are to facilitate the placement of the artist’s work in public collections and to promote public awareness of her life and work through scholarly research and documentation, exhibitions, publications, and educational and collaborative projects. The Trust will publish a major monograph for the artist with Rizzoli to be released in the fall of 2024 and accompanied by solo exhibitions at Bortolami Gallery in Tribeca and University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
