3-D Printing: Level 2
This course will prepare students to work with advanced parametric digital techniques in relation to their physical numerically controlled execution using hybrid and advanced digital fabrication techniques. It is designed for designers and makers of all types: architects, engineers, fashion designers, object designers, technicians and artists. 3D Printing: Level 2 builds on the skills introduced in the Introduction to Digital Fabrication course and covers the use of various rapid prototyping and advanced fabrication techniques to build three dimensional physical forms or objects from a digital design. More advanced techniques, based on parametric designs for reverse engineering, will be studied. The course will also compare devices and techniques currently available, and analyze future trends in digital fabrication technology. Participants will develop individual projects with the assistance of the instructor and have hands-on access to computer numerically controlled fabrication equipment. A schedule for rapid prototyping will be provided by the instructor according to machine availability. Students’ prototypes will be constrained by the time allocated for production, student budget, and resources. Material costs for production are borne by students and depend on the costs for materials required by their projects.
Requirements: Introduction to Digital Fabrication or knowledge of Rhino 3D and Grasshopper (introduction) is necessary. It is highly recommended that students bring their own laptops with installed software (Rhinoceros 5.0) for plug-ins installation and customization, although computers will be made available for hands on exercises.
Recommended installed software: Rhinoceros 5.0 and Grasshopper. A Rhinoceros trial version can be downloaded for free within a limited time. Grasshopper plug in can be downloaded for free. www.rhino3d.com. .
