Required materials for the FIRST class:
soft vine or willow charcoal
erasers
artist’s or masking tape
chamois
2 sheets of drawing or charcoal paper
Materials for subsequent classes:
(*Materials will be discussed at the first class session)
Classes 1-3:
Charcoal Sticks: Soft vine or willow, soft and medium compressed, square Charkole (cheap, black pastel) Erasers: Artgum, rubber or plastic, kneaded.
Classes 4-6:
Black Waterproof Drawing Ink: Asian sumei or Pelikan, Winsor Newton, Higgins Brush: Sable or other soft hair, bristle, or synthetic: rounds, flats, brights Sticks (twigs) and 4 water containers.
Classes 7-8:
Graphite Sticks or Woodless Pencils (Pitt brand): B, 4B, 6B, 9B Erasers: Artgum, rubber or plastic, kneaded.
Classes 9-10:
Black Conte Crayon: HB, B, 2B or the “Classic” Conte set Erasers: Artgum, rubber or plastic, kneaded.
Additional materials for ALL classes:
artists' drafting or masking tape
chamois and soft cotton rag
single-edge razor blade, sandpaper
foamcore to use as a drawing board and portfolio
Paper (number of sheets of paper will vary depending on individual's work pace):
For Dry Media: Basic Drawing (Vellum or Smooth), Charcoal/Pastel
For Wet/Dry Media: Watercolor, coldpress or hotpress; Printmaking; Bristol
Artist-grade paper brands widely available include Arches, Strathmore, Rives, Fabriano, Canson, Lana, Saunders.
Paper sizes will vary, but some standard sheet sizes are 19 x 24", 22 x 30" and larger. Watercolor blocks and pads come in a variety of other sizes as well.
Manufacturers listed above provide professional-grade materials that are widely available. Other brands may be substituted.
