Students from partner schools who wish to participate in exchange with the School of Art at The Cooper Union should consult directly with their foreign exchange/international coordinator. THE SCHOOL OF ART DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN EXCHANGE WITH SCHOOLS OR INDIVIDUALS OUTSIDE OF THE NETWORK LISTED ABOVE.

We accept students on exchange for a single semester only.

Portfolio
All proposals, slide lists, and project descriptions must be typed in English. All drawings, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture MUST be submitted as slides, books or booklets. ONLY film/video/animation or interactive projects may be submitted as DVDs, CDs or URLs. We cannot view PAL format. VHS tapes must be in NTSC format. Your name and home school must be clearly printed directly on your proposal, slide list, every slide, CD, and DVD and their cases. Do not spray paint or attach labels. Portfolio size cannot exceed 12x15 envelope.

The application form must be filled out and included with the portfolio.

Application Deadline
The application deadline is March 15 for either semester (term) (fall and spring) of the following academic year. We do, however, honor an October 15 deadline for the following spring term.

Calendar
The Cooper Union academic calendar varies slightly each year. Fall semester begins the Tuesday after Labor Day and typically ends the third week in December. Spring semester begins the Tuesday after Martin Luther King Day and typically ends the second week in May.

Rules and Regulations
Students who are accepted to The Cooper Union for exchange or mobility must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by The Cooper Union. Class attendance is mandatory. Students must agree to finish the entire term and are not permitted to depart before the end of such term.

Orientation
There is a mandatory orientation on the Thursday preceding the start of classes.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.
