Prof. Schulte holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Structural Engineering from the Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany. He is a registered structural engineer in Europe and in multiple states in the United States. Prof. Schulte is teaching at the Irwin S. Chanin School for Architecture since fall 2010. He teaches Arch 152 – Structures IV.
Prof. Schulte joined Ove Arup & Partners in 1993. As structural engineer and Project Director for complex, multidisciplinary projects, Prof. Schulte pioneers the design and construction of sophisticated buildings in the US and around the world. His work has been featured in multiple publications around the world. He is a principal with Arup’s New York Office; his responsibilities include the leadership of Arup’s Façade Engineering & Building Physics Group.
Amongst a long list of projects his experience includes the supervision of all of Arup’s design and construction administration activities for the award-winning renovation, upgrade and expansion of Lincoln Center’s campus in New York City – a $1.2bn project. In addition, Prof. Schulte has been responsible for the engineering design, analysis and construction of the Sony Center in Berlin, Germany – a large-scale Urban Entertainment Center that features multiple flagship stores and theaters. His experience includes the engineering design and analysis of the ‘stadium size’ Forum Roof exploring a unique combination of glass and Teflon coated fabric on a cable structure.
Prof. Schulte has been a visiting lecturer on issues related to the design of complex structural systems at the Technical University in Berlin, Germany, at the University in Vienna, Austria, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and at City College in New York.
Over the years Prof. Schulte’s work has been recognized with multiple awards. Recently in 2010, and again in 2011, Prof. Schulte’s work on Lincoln Center was recognized with the IDEAS Award, the highest honor by the structural steel industry for structural engineering excellence in the country.
