Cape Cod Trip
Dean Baker has spent a significant amount of time in Cape Cod. As the best all-around athlete in the town of Falmouth in 1952, he has developed connections with the community on the academic, social, and athletic levels. In fact, the towns of Falmouth and Woods Hole have played a major role in facilitating the Cooper Union athletic teams’ activities for the week. In 1992, we started with only the soccer team on the trip. This summer, we’ll bring the soccer team, the women’s and men’s basketball teams, the men’s volleyball team, and the golf team. The Cape Cod trip will begin on Friday, August 26, and finish on Saturday, September 3, 2016.
During the trip, the teams improve tremendously by honing their skills, and focusing on individual goals and aspirations in preparation for their upcoming seasons. Since the trip occurs at a time when most students have been separated from one another for a number of months, priority is placed on establishing social, emotional, and personal connections between scholar-athletes. To that end, various meals, a trip to Martha’s Vineyard on the Island Queen, and numerous other activities are scheduled to re-establish such relationships and provide a healthy platform for team building.
Each team lives in a house that is designed to facilitate the needs of that specific sport and its athletes. The players cook for themselves and on occasion they cook for all the athletes. The volleyball team plays most of their practices in the sand and goes indoors in the evenings.
The players play with the professors and researchers of Woods Hole and enjoy the dialogue before, during, and after the games.
Strategies, game plans, improvement of individual skills and new moves are studied and perfected. Challenges are created, met, and remembered.
