The occupation of the president's office expresses an abiding passion for Cooper and a traumatic response to the change in the scholarship policy. Full-tuition scholarships for all enrolled degree students have been central to Cooper's identity, and have enabled a kind of meritocracy that is rare.

The Cooper Union community has demonstrated its passion and commitment in supporting the Annual Fund, which has raised the highest total in its history.
At $3.1 million, we have exceeded our $2.5 million goal and increased our total Annual Fund dollars by 41 percent in FY 12 compared with FY 11. The Annual Fund provides unrestricted dollars to help cover Cooper’s operating expenses (which were $70 million in FY 11 according to the audited financial statement).

As I enter the final stretch of my first year as President of Cooper Union, I am gratified that we have made tremendous progress in our discussions about its future. Two objectives have guided our work: to position Cooper Union for continued academic distinction in the future, and to place the institution on a financially sustainable course.

I am writing to wish you a warm welcome back to The Cooper Union as we begin our spring 2012 term. It has been my pleasure to meet with so many of you since my arrival last July as the 12th president of this vital institution. The 34 sessions I have had with approximately 300 students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents have been especially enlightening. Many of you shared your experience of The Cooper Union and your commitment to help us through challenging times. I invite those of you who have not previously signed up to join me for a session this spring.

Since my arrival at Cooper Union in July 2011, I’ve had the pleasure of talking with many of you about this extraordinary institution and the tremendous opportunities we have going forward as leaders and innovators.
There really is no other institution like Cooper Union. In teaching and working with students and faculty, I’ve learned more about the texture and nuances of our academic community. Among them is an unparalleled commitment by students to their work.
President's Address: December 13, 2011
Five months and one week ago Jessie Papatolicas, our two puppies and I began our new life at Cooper Union. It has been a distinct honor and privilege to assume the presidency of this historic institution as the twelfth president in the Peter Cooper succession.
Taking a new job is always an adventure. Many people stay at one job all their lives. I was ready for an adventure and I am thrilled that it has proved to be one. Despite the turmoil, I wake up each day inspired by the institution, by its founder, and most of all, by you all, the people I serve.

Dear members of the Cooper Union Community,
Since my arrival at Cooper Union this past July, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many members of our academic community. It’s been exciting to talk about the future of our institution with you.
Some of our conversations have been about the difficulties our institution faces at the present moment. We live in difficult financial times and, as I recently told a New York Times reporter, we face some immediate challenges.
