College Application Essay Workshop

The Cooper Union Summer Writing Program is excited to announce a one-day workshop on the College Application Essay. Students at any stage of writing an undergraduate college application essay are invited to participate Saturday, November 19th from 10am-3pm at The Cooper Union.

Who should attend? Whether you’re just beginning to think about an application essay or putting the final touches on one before sending it in, this workshop offers tools and strategies to make your college application essay stand out. You will have the opportunity to strengthen and review your essay through Cooper Union’s unique and proven writing methods and will leave the workshop with directed feedback and individually-tailored strategies from our experienced Writing Associates for completing a compelling essay.

How it works: In the first part of the workshop, you will be introduced to narrative strategies for crafting a convincing and unique application essay. We’ll review past successful essays and work through a series of exercises to help both test a student’s existing essay as well as build the foundation for a future essay. After lunch, students will work in small groups with one of our experienced Writing Associate to compose, revise and strengthen an essay draft before meeting individually with one of our instructors for specific feedback.

The Cooper Union Approach: This workshop, like our Summer Writing Program, is modeled on the unique work we do at The Cooper Union. Our approaches are designed for students with diverse learning styles and are effective both for students who don't identify as writers and for those who enjoy writing.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
