Coronavirus & 2020 Admissions

March 18, 2020

As we’ve all seen, the COVID-19 virus has had an enormous impact around the world. This disruption has undoubtedly impacted you and your family. At The Cooper Union, we would like to take this opportunity to provide a brief update about our admissions process which we hope will help to create some certainty for you as an applicant.

As of today:

1. We expect to meet our planned admissions notification date of April 1. Our intention is that our applicants will receive a response to their application on or before that date.

2. While our deposit deadline for those students who are admitted will remain as May 1, we have pre-approved an extension to May 15 for ALL students who need it. If you are admitted on April 1 and need until May 15 to submit your deposit, we will hold your position—no appeal required.

3. We recognize that for some admitted students and their families, the admission deposit may represent a financial challenge, especially in light of recent events. Accordingly, for students planning to enroll, but for whom the deposit may be difficult, we want you to know that we will work with you to find alternatives. We want to offer as much flexibility as we can.

Please reach out to us after April 1 if this applies to you and your family. We hope this information is helpful as you consider your college plans at this most extraordinary time. As always, please reach out to the Admissions Office if you need support in any way. While we are working from home, we anticipate being able to answer your questions without significant delay. The best way to reach us is by email at admissions@cooper.edu.

International students, please be sure to give yourself ample time to apply for a visa and keep checking the State Department website for visa timing. Email Assistant Director of International Student Services, Hala Alkasm at hala.alkasm@cooper.edu with any questions or concerns. In the case that your visa is denied or delayed beyond May 15, please provide documentation and we will refund your deposit. You should also visit the international applicants page for updates.

For all financial aid- and deposit-related questions, following the release of the financial aid award letters on April 6, please contact Student Financial Services by email at cusfs@cooper.edu.

Sincerely,

Mark Campbell
Vice President for Enrollment

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
